Pirates of the Caribbean was a last-minute addition to the Magic Kingdom, which was supposed to receive a brand-new Marc Davis-designed attraction named “Western River Expedition” in its place. The oft-told story is that guest demand for Pirates, which was a smash-hit at Disneyland, forced Walt Disney World management to put off indefinitely the construction of Western River and in its place a shortened, non-competing version of Pirates was tacked onto Adventureland in a new mini-land named Caribbean Plaza. The history of Western River Expedition is best told by FoxxFur in an excellent series of articles on the site Passport to Dreams Old and New.

The ride opened on December 15, 1973 and remained largely untouched until the mid-1990s, when the ride was closed for an extensive rehab that removed the load area’s side-by-side troughs and finicky switches and altered show scenes to make sections of the attraction more “politically correct.” The pooped pirate no longer stalked a girl hiding in a barrel (although she was still in it) and the gag showing two sets of pirates chasing women endlessly, only to have the set-up reversed a third time with a woman chasing a pirate with a broom was altered to show the pirates lusting for food instead of sex.

Later rehabs would alter not only the dialog of the ride with the addition of Jack Sparrow scenes for an obvious tie into the successful film series, but ultimately changes to the grotto section and the removal of the pre-drop warning skull and echoey voices after the drop and prior to the sea battle.

Fortunately, I was able to capture all of these and more sometime between 1993-1994. What you’ll hear is about as close to the original version of Pirates as possible and includes tracks from the extensive queue area and exit.
